HEARTS OF SALFORD. THE HISTORY.
Hearts of Salford is a safe informative and relaxed on-line meeting place for people and the families of people living with heart disease and related health problems.
It was originally a research study, a randomised control trial by the University of Salford Institute for Social, Culture and Policy Research. The research was led by Professor Paul Bellaby, his team included Dr Simon Smith and Dr Sally Lindsay. It set out to test if facilitated access to the internet could have an impact on the ability of older people to manage coronary heart disease and improve quality of life. It was a closed site and restricted to people aged 50-74 years living in Salford. The project started recruiting in May 2006 and finished in Oct.2007. The results were largely positive.
As participants in the study we valued the resource so much (above all the opportunity to interact with each other using discussion forums) that we have since taken over the development of the website, and have constituted ourselves as a community group (AGM on April 8th 2008). We have made the resource available to other people who did not take part in the research study and it is now open to people of all ages and from all geographical areas.
It is not a professional Health Website and though there is information on there about health issues we caution everyone to consult their current doctor or other health professional before making any changes to their treatments or lifestyle.
Hearts of Salford serves as a gateway for information about heart disease, healthy living and local services. Members can share experiences and learn from each other. They can also have a good old natter about life in general in the wide range of discussion forums.
Hearts of Salford HOS is now organised by a management committee of six volunteer members all of whom have heart conditions. Dr Simon Smith sits on the committee in an advisory and consultative role. Our Honorary President is Professor Paul Bellaby. Institute for Social, Culture and Policy Research. University of Salford.
